Non-US holdings

Map non-US listings and mixed portfolios, agree price coverage, and prepare your first snapshot.

Use this path for stocks and ETFs listed outside the US, including mixed portfolios with unlisted funds. Agree the exact listing, currency and price coverage with Motif for each market. The worked example uses an Australian book; use the same process for other markets after confirming their exchange identifiers and coverage.

For non-listed holdings, private funds and direct private-company equity, also follow Non-listed and private holdings. Geography and instrument structure are separate mapping decisions.

1. Map the instruments with Motif

Use the exact listing and share class, especially for non-standard equity such as multiple share classes or cross-listed securities. An issuer name or familiar ticker alone is not enough. Confirm unusual security structures with Motif before treating them as an ordinary STOCK or ETF. The example below uses ASX; do not reuse that exchange for another market.

Your holding
Snapshot type
Identity
Price responsibility

ASX-listed company

STOCK

Exact symbol plus exchange: "ASX"

Motif checks market coverage; your dated valuation can be used when market pricing is unavailable

ASX-listed ETF

ETF

Exact symbol plus exchange: "ASX"

Same coverage check as other listed securities

Unlisted managed fund

FUND

Exact share-class code, such as its APIR code; no exchange

You supply the administrator's or manager's dated unit NAV

Cash

Top-level cash

Portfolio currency

You supply the observed cash balance

An ETF belongs in the listed path even when its name contains “fund.” Different unlisted share classes need different identifiers. Agree these mappings before sending a large book.

2. Agree currencies and prices

The current snapshot API requires every holding valuation to use the portfolio's base currency. The AUD example therefore needs AUD unit values. If your source includes foreign-currency positions, agree the conversion and provenance with Motif before importing them; the endpoint does not perform FX conversion.

If your portfolio administrator supplies both positions and market data, use its observed unit values and price timestamps in the agreed mapping. The snapshot's timestamp records when the positions were observed; each valuation has its own timestamp. Keep an older fund NAV dated to its actual observation, even when today's positions use that NAV.

Together, check one listed price, one unlisted NAV, and the longest historical window you need. Listing recognition alone does not establish current price or history coverage.

3. Prepare a test snapshot: Australian mixed portfolio

Save this as snapshot.json, replacing the example holdings with the pilot agreed with Motif. All quantities and prices below are illustrative; DEMO-FUND-A is a test identifier, not an APIR code.

4. Check the pilot together

Verify that the stock and ETF resolve to their intended exchange, the fund retains its share-class identity, and the selected price source is correct for each position. Listed market quotes may take precedence over the illustrative supplied values, so reconcile against the prices returned by the API.

Send a second snapshot with changed quantities and a new dated fund NAV. Confirm that omitted positions disappear and that scheduled calculations keep the portfolio current. Agree how operations will handle a missing quote or an overdue NAV.

Next: Create and verify the portfolio.
